Local Music

November 9, 2009

I pulled off a surprise 30th birthday party for my sister at one of her favorite live music spots in the Boston area. I invited some of her favorite local musicians to perform for her…and the result was quite magical. The folks who made it out on a Sunday night to celebrate with my sister witnessed a musical celebration as well. The party was infused with the love and goodness that permeates from my sister, and it was also a superb reminder of just how talented some of our local artists are…and how appreciative they are to the people who support them. I don’t think anyone who attended will soon forget the night.

These local artists blow me away each and every time I see them perform. Thanks goes out to them for helping to make the night so special.

NEW Music: Norah Jones

November 6, 2009

NorahJones

One more week until Norah Jones releases her new album, The Fall. A few weeks back, I posted a snippet of the single “Chasing Pirates” which I’ve been absolutely loving. Well, today I was delighted to see that NPR is previewing the entire record on their website. CLICK HERE.

The album is great. It’s got a very CHILL feeling to it, like most of her music…but it’s definitely a bit different from the old Norah Jones. She’s exploring some new age/pop territory without altering the smokey, warm vocals that are so distinctly her.

Here’s the new video for the “Chasing Pirates” single…it may be taken down soon:

NEW Music: The Swell Season

November 5, 2009

SwellSeason

I am LOVING this album. If you’ve seen the movie Once, you’re familiar with Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova…otherwise known as The Swell Season. The duo starred in the 2007 film and also did the soundtrack (the single “Falling Slowly” won them an Academy Award). They’ve just put out a follow-up to the soundtrack…an album called Strict Joy. While the record formally came out about a week ago, the single, “Low Rising” has been out for some time now and quickly became a favorite here at mvyradio.

“Low Rising” starts off the album, with it’s cool, easy pace and simple but catchy chorus…it’s obvious why this track was chosen for the radio single. I’ve got to pause a moment here to show you the incredible new video for this tune, directed by Sam Beam (Iron & Wine):

Anyways, back to the album…”Low Rising” is followed by a tune that is almost opposite in mood. “Feeling The Pull” has a fitting urgency about it, with fast piano, strong strumming, and more powerful vocals from Hansard.

Then comes track three, “In These Arms”, which is simple and somber. At this point I’m totally pulled into the album…the progression of tracks couldn’t be more perfect. These first three are on their MySpace page, check them out in the correct order to hear the effect I’m talking about.

Things only get better…I couldn’t possibly tell you my favorite tracks because each and every one is so unique and beautifully done. If you listen to a bit and like what you hear, I do believe this is a flawless album that you will enjoy from start to finish.

The Swell Season will be at the Berklee Performance Center in Boston on Friday and at Lupo’s in Providence on Saturday.

Carly Simon recently had a session on Daytrotter.com where her son Ben Taylor joined her, and they created some really magical moments. I got chills while listening to them do “You’re So Vain”.

Lyric Of The Week

November 4, 2009

I’ve decided to add this new feature to my blog since lyrics are probably my favorite aspect of most music. For a while now I’ve been thinking about highlighting lyrics weekly, but what sealed the deal was how struck I was by a line I heard this morning in George Harrison’s “Any Road” …

“If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there”

Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers – “Shady Esperanto & the Young Hearts”

In this tune off his latest album, The Bear, Stephen Kellogg talks about how he never wants to get old. Well to me, this song never gets old! It always lifts my spirits and the video sure does make me smile…

OK…I’ve confessed to you that I’m obsessed with FOX’s reality dance competition, So You Think You Can Dance?. Now that my secret is out, I’m compelled to share this unbelievable group dance that kicked off season 6 of the program last week. The song may be familiar to you…it’s “Comanche” by The Revels and it’s featured in the movie Pulp Fiction. The routine is choreographed by the brilliant Wade Robson. The costumes are perfect, the moves are smooth and quick, and the dancers give off a cool and professional vibe. It’s just a brilliant routine that got me very fired up for this new season.

Check it out…the dance starts at about 1:25

The In-Kraut

November 2, 2009

InKraut

Have you ever had a party or gathering and struggled to find the perfect music for the mood? At a recent get-together, my friend put on an album that really worked. It was one of three compilations that were released a few years ago titled, The In-Kraut. I’ve never listened to German music before, but this stuff is perfect in the background of a gathering where you’re mostly focused on socializing (or baseball games!). “Hip Shaking Grooves Made In Germany” is what it says on the front cover, and all three volumes of The In-Kraut deliver just that. They’re poppy and fun without being obnoxious or over the top. The tunes will make people tap their toes and ask, “What’s this?”. All three albums include funky originals and some really fun covers by all sorts of different German artists. If this sparks your interest, try Volume 3, which seems to be the most popular.
